10 Networking Do’s and Dont’s

As a business owner, much of my time is spent networking.

“Networking” can be an amorphous term, so let me offer a simple definition: the intentional act of building and nurturing relationships that create mutual value over time.

My career depends on strong relationships, smart collaborations, and being top-of-mind when companies need operational leadership. Over the years, I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t.

Here are 10 networking do’s and don’ts that I’ve learned the hard way and the rewarding way.

✅ 1. DO: Start by listening

Whenever I meet someone new, I treat it like a discovery call. What are they building? Where are they stuck? What keeps them up at night? Listening first builds trust and often reveals where I can add value.

❌ 1. DON’T: Lead with your resume

I get it—we’re all proud of our work. But rattling off credentials too soon makes it about you, not them. I’ve learned that the more I listen, the more people ask to hear my story.

✅ 2. DO: Be clear about what you offer

When meeting new people, be ready with a short, straightforward description of your work.

Avoid jargon, and focus on the value you bring. A clear message helps others understand how you fit into the bigger picture and makes it easier for them to refer or connect you.

❌ 2. DON’T: Say you “do it all”

Saying, “I can do it all,” might seem impressive, but it dilutes your value. What’s the expression? “Jack of all trades, master of none.”

✅ 3. DO: Follow up with intention

After a great chat, I’ll send a note that references something we discussed—maybe an article, a connection, or a shared insight. It shows I was present and thoughtful, not just collecting contacts.

❌ 3. DON’T: Treat follow-ups like chores

People can tell when your message is copy-pasted. If I don’t have anything meaningful to say in a follow-up, I wait until I do.

✅ 4. DO: Give before you get

Some of my best relationships started with, “Hey, I thought you might find this helpful.” Whether it’s a resource, a warm intro, or a second set of eyes on a challenge. giving value builds credibility fast.

❌ 4. DON’T: Make it transactional

Networking works when it’s human. If you’re only reaching out when you need something, you’re not building a network; you’re burning one.

✅ 5. DO: Customize your approach

Before a meeting, I always scan LinkedIn or their company site to understand context. That helps me ask smarter questions and make the most of our time.

❌ 5. DON’T: Default to small talk

In my line of work, time is currency. Skip the fluff and have real conversations. People remember those.

Throughout my career, every client, collaborator, and opportunity has come through a conversation, not a cold pitch. Networking is how I build trust, stay relevant, and keep solving the right problems for the right people.
